Downtown Release Party
"In The Beginning"
The Ski Barn

Margot Nicholson-Trott and the Georgian Frame Gallery in Downtown Collingwood welcomed well known Collingwood Artist Nick Hodson at the release party for "In The Beginning" The Ski Barn.

Saturday October 6th was a special day for Collingwood Artist Nick Hodson. The Georgian Frame Gallery hosted the release party for "In The Beginning" The Ski Barn from Mr. Hodson's collection. The Ski Barn was a fixture in the early days of Blue Mountain. Throughout the 1950's and 60's, The Ski Barn welcomed skiers with hot coffee, tremendous chili and apres-ski gatherings. When people spoke of their visit to Blue Mountain, the conversation somehow always managed to become a discussion of what had happend at the Ski Barn. "The Georgian Frame Gallery is pleased that Mr. Hodson asked us to publish this historically significant piece of art." says owner Margot Nicholson - Trott.

Mr. Hodson, now in his 90's, painted this wonderful image in the early 1950's while taking lessons from renowned local artist Robert Kemp. Mr. Hodson is best known in the Collingwood area for his historically significant pencil sketches, as well as paintings of houses and many of the ships that were launched from the northern end of Hurontario Street in the Collingwood Shipyards.

The Ski Barn was a gathering place at Blue Mountain Resort. The administration offices and "The Inn" now occupy the land where The Ski Barn once stood.

Collingwood Artist Nick Hodson is best known for his black and white sketches of historic buildings and scenes from Collingwood. The above sketch captures life in downtown Collingwood as it was in the mid 1970's. Notice the ship at the northern end of Hurontario Street. During this time period, the massive great lakes freighter would have recently been launched at the Collingwood Shipyards. You'll also notice other former landmarks of the Shipyards including the water tower.
